Drawing upon more than 25 years of high-level coaching experience, Alex Groothuis is the high school dean of students and head men's basketball coach at Coral Springs Charter School in Florida. Before joining the school in 2010, Alex Groothuis served three years as assistant coach of the men's team at Fordham University, where he coached 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year Bryant Dunston.
A native of Queens, New York, Dunston played for Fordham University from 2004 to 2008, during which time he averaged 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and 1.6 assists per game. While he wasn't drafted into the National Basketball Association upon leaving Fordham, he soon found success playing professionally in Europe. After a brief stint with Mobis Phoebus of the Korean Basketball League, Dunston signed with Aris Thessaloniki of the Greek League, where he averaged 6.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.
In 2012, Dunston signed with Pallacanestro Varese of the Italian League and had the best season of his eight-year career. Through 30 games, he averaged 15.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game, all of which are career-high figures. The following year, he joined Olympiacos of the EuroLeague and, through five years in the league, has won its Best Defender award twice.
